Question 4-Unexpected perspective
Looking at the world from unusual viewpoints can reveal unexpected perspectives. Ed Ruscha's photographs of car parks, Alexander Rodchenko's observations of city streets and Bill Brandt's high-contrast images are all taken from unconventional viewpoints.
Definitions:
- Unusual- Uncommon or abnormal. Interesting because different or extraordinary
- Viewpoints- Angle or position
- Unexpected- Not regarded as likely to happen
- Perspectives-View
- Observations- The action or process of viewing something or somebody
- High contrast- Contrast is the difference between the light and dark tones in an image, so high contrast images would have a high range of tones with bright highlights and dark shadows.
- Unconventional- Different and unusual, not based on something that is generally done
Possible approaches, techniques and processes-
The different angles that i would include to capture unexpected perspectives would be low/high angles, ants eye view, birds eye view and slanted angles. I think that with this question i will be able to have a number of different and varied approaches to capturing unexpected perspectives as i could base my shoots on human bodies like Bill Brandt, within the city like Alexander Rodchenko, on household objects like cutlery, on nature etc. So i think that to begin i will approach a whole variety of ideas of what to photograph and then i will develop my work in order to create a cohesive body of work and have links between all of my work, not just photograph random objects from unexpected perspectives. I think that with my processes for when I'm shooting, I will try to use a tripod when possible because i will be taking photos from different types of angles so a tripod will hall me to keep the camera steady if i need to take a photo from an unusual position. Also, i will shoot in camera RAW file instead of jpeg to ensure i achieve the best quality images, and when i edit the photos i can edit them in further detail. For my editing processes i think that i will focus on editing the images so that they appear with higher contrast like Bill Brandts photographs, and by making my photos with darker tones and higher contrasts it will add to the effect of the unexpected perspective as the image will become more abnormal.
Question 2-Materials
The physical properties of glass, wood, fabric or concrete, have inspired photographers and filmmakers to produce inventive images. Stephen Gill has incorporated street debris in his work. Helene Binet's photographs of concrete buildings record the qualities of the materials used in construction. The 'Glassworks' series by Fay Godwin records the various qualities of glass.
